Title: Northern Pacific civil engineers' tents and 1st Headquarters Hotel under construction, Fargo (D.T.)

Summary: View of a tent city with wooden hotel building in the background. A few men stand around the fronts of the tents to the left. The foreground is grass.||Fargo was founded as The Crossing in 1871 and was known unofficially as Tent City. The name changed first to Centralia, then to Fargo in 1872. The city, located on the Red River, is the seat of Cass County. This picture shows tents from the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and is very early in the existance of the town. The wooden structure is the first Headquarters Hotel.
