Summary: James Emmons sits posed for a formal portrait. He wears a light-colored suit, vest, and bow-tie with anchor pin.||James E. Emmons came to Dakota Territory in 1865 and operated steamboats on the river constantly until 1872, carrying supplies to Indian trading posts and mines. From August 1872 to 1879, he operated various enterprises in Bismarck. He was appointed to the first Burleigh county Board of Commissioners by Governor John Burbank in 1873.
