Summary: Men in working in a machine shop on the coal mining cars. The wheels are in the foreground on a work bench and a man is standing in the background. It is a very crowded room with chains hanging from the ceiling.||Not all mine employees picked coal. Some worked in the summer to extend the mine shafts. Others worked on the surface maintaining equipment for the safety of the miners. The Washburn Lignite Coal Company was founded by businessman and politician William Washburn in 1900. At one point, this mine near Wilton was the largest of its type in the world. In 1928 the company was bought out by Otter Tail Power Company.
