Succeeded to office upon the death of Governor A. G. Sorlie, August 28, 1928. __Walter Maddock was Lieutenant Governor, and became Governor when Arthur Sorlie died in office. He ran for governor on his own after filling out Sorlie's term, but was defeated by George F. Shafer. Maddock was the first governor of North Dakota born in the state.
