Title: March 1961: A week-long series of conferences at the Statler-Hilton Hotel has brought 2000 American Legionnaires to the nation’s capital for a new look at a 42 year old organization. Purpose of the meeting, the first of its kind ever staged by the legion, is to “gear the 2,700,000 member legion for the challenge of the ‘60’s,” according to national commander William R. Burke. Taking a prominent part in the planning sessions are Senator Milton Young, W.J. Gust. Jr. (St. Thomas) and Senator Burdick.
