[Obituary Minneapolis_Star_Tribune_Tue__Mar_9__1982_pC5] Robert MacFarlane rail executive dies. Robert Stetson MacFarlane, a railroad executive who helped create the Burlington Northern Railroad through the merger of several lines died Saturday in United Hospitals in St. Paul (Minn.). He was 83. MacFarlane began his railroad career in 1934 when he resigned as a judge in Seattle (Wash.) to become a lawyer for the Northern Pacific Railway. He was elected an executive vice president of the railway in 1947 and president in 1950. When he retired from the president’s post in 1966, he was elected board chairman. MacFarlane played a key role in the merger of the railroads, including the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern, into what was to become the Burlington Northern. He was elected chairman emeritus and a director of the Burlington Northern in 1970. He also served as a director for several area companies and was active in the United Way of St. Paul (Minn.). MacFarlane is survived by his wife, Vivian; son Robert Jr. of Pacific Palisades (Calif.), and daughters Anne Jones, Seattle (Wash.), and Mimi Griggs and Vicki Bruns, both of St. Paul (Minn.). Private funeral services were held Monday, March 9, 1982.
