Title: Poor (Lean) Wolf in traditional Hidatsa headdress

Inscription/Marks: On the front: "Poor (Lean) Wolf", and "Paul A. Ewald", typed, and "28" in red on a round sticker. On the back: col. 86-585 and the identification noted in the summary.
Summary: A cropped reproduction of a Curtis portrait photograph shows a Hidatsa elder known as Poor (sometimes "Lean") Wolf in an elaborate horn, feather, and ermine tail headdress, wearing a decorated leather tunic. He was also called by his native language name Tsesha-Hadhadish. Poor Wolf was born about 1820 and raised in the Awaxawi Hidatsa village at the mouth of the Mouth River on the Missouri. Poor Wolf was one of the first elders to convert to Christianity and was baptized as Abraham Poor Wolf in 1893. His Edward Curtis portrait was taken around 1908 on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
