Title: Nine members of the combined Mandan and Arikara delegation attending negotiations in Washington, D.C.
Date: 1875
Inscription/Marks: On the front each man is identified with a typed name sticker. On the back: col. 86-593, numerous Ewald stamps, identifiv=cation notes and a page from a history book with details about the delegation.
Summary: A group of nine of the delegates selected to represent the interests of the Indians from Fort Berthold in Dakota Territory at meetings in Washington, D.C., 1875. Right to left in the back row are: Howard Mandan (aka. Scared Face or Running Face), Charles Packineau, Indian Agent Lyman Beecher Sperry, and Peter Beauchamp, Jr. In the front row, left to right, sitting: Dance Flag, Bad Gun (aka. Charging Eagle), Son-of-the-Star, Bullhead, and Black Fox. The men were attempting to negotiate with the government about escalating hostilities between the government and the Indian tribes. The discussions successfully held off military action from Custer until the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Bad Gun, Peter Beauchamp, Jr., Bullhead, Black Fox, Dance Flag, and Son-of-the-Star were Arikara. Running Face and Bob Tail Bull were Mandan. Charles Packineau was an interpreter. __L. B. Sperry is misidentified as Peter Beauchamp, Sr.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
