Title: Hand separator turned by sheep power
Date: Circa 1900
Inscription/Marks: On the front, typed below the image: The hand separator turned by sheep power", and written by hand in the margins: P.M. Mattson of New Rockford had one like this...power machine like this used in 1890 till 1906. Donated by Theo Mattson Little Falls Minn to N. Dak Museum. On the back: col.63-11.
Summary: A sheep stands on a treadmill attached to a cream separator.||Before electricity was available on North Dakota farms, farmers found other ways of managing their energy needs. Dogs, sheep, or goats could power a treadmill that operated small equipment. Small animals could only produce a small amount of power. On this farm, a sheep walks a treadmill to turn a cream separator. If the sheep refused to walk, the separator would have to be turned by hand crank.
