Title: The WPA-modified Armory building in Jamestown (N.D.)
Date: 1938-1941
Inscription/Marks: On the front in green ink: Jamestown Auditorium. On the back: 0075-286, and "129" stamped.
Summary: The original part of the armory building in downtown Jamestown (N.D.) was designed by the Fargo firm of Haxby and Gillespie and finished in 1912. Faced with pressed brick from the Hebron Brick Company, the original section is 3 stories high, with a flat roof and corbelled parapet, and largely obscured in the picture by a boulevard tree. The ground floor or basement level housed the YWCA, the Armory the main floors. Inside are a swimming pool, gymnasium, showers and bowling alleys. In 1938 architect Gilbert Horton used WPA aid to construct modifications he designed. The alterations to the main facade entry included construction of an Art Deco stairwell and a lower story entry. Also added was a two story garage, Art Moderne/Deco built on the south side using poured concrete. Listed on the national Register of Historic Places with the identifying number 32SN513.
