Title: People gather to watch the skiers at the ski jump in Fargo (N.D.)
Date: 1935-1942
Creator: Bogenrief, Henry,--1903-1997
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0075-445, "18" stamped, and the Bogenrief stamp.
Summary: People are bundled up for a day of watching the ski jumpers compete at the WPA-built Jump, on the banks of the Red River in Fargo (N.D.). The 140 feet high structure is 300 feet long, allowing the jumpers to achieve jumps as long as 160 to 170 feet. A ski jump was originally built in Moorhead, Minnesota, just across the river, by the Dovre Ski Club. In 1935 with assistance of the WPA, the jump was dismantled and reconstructed in Fargo. It remained the highest ski jump in the country, until it was demolished in 1942. The high jump allows the skiers, seen here trudging up the jump, skis on their shoulders, to reach speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour. No wonder people have driven to see the athletes. A second, much lower jump is in the foreground.
