Title: People gathered outside Francis Densmore's shanty office at McLaughlin, S.D.

Summary: On the flat prairie by McLaughlin, S.D., a tarpaper shanty serves as an office for ethno-musicologist Frances Densmore as she researches the Sioux Indians and some of their customs. Covering a window in the side of the office is a flapping curtain of striped material. Another piece of fabric forms a front door canopy by which three men stand and watch a white haired woman in a long dress walk from the office. Seated on the ground nearby are several blanket covered women and one or two women holding babies. A few stray structures dot the surrounding landscape. It is possible that the light-haired woman is in fact Densmore. Taken in 1913.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
