Title: A woman and two men with horses stand outside an earth lodge near the Missouri River
Date: Circa 1910
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-986.
Summary: A traditional Hidatsa or Mandan earth lodge with vertical planks forming the entrance passage is near a small log and sod roofed cabin in a area within sight of the Missouri River. A woman in a long, dark dress stands outside the lodge by two men who are in conversation. A pair of horses wait by the people. It is likely this photograph was collected as part of the research by various ethnologists on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in the early decades of the 1900s. "The Hidatsa Earth lodge" by Wilson and Bella Weitzner (1934) American Museum of Natural History was published posthumously and completed using his notes on the remaining standing lodges and their construction.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
