Title: Calf Woman and Mrs. Gilbert Wilson by a tipi and log cabin on the Fort Berthold Reservation

Inscription/Marks: On the front: "'III-72", which is associated with the Gilbert Wilson collection at the Minnesota Historical Society. On the back: col. 86-1147, incorrect identification of Calf Woman, and an Ewald stamp.
Summary: Calf Woman poses in the opening of the tipi she has finished erecting outside her sod-roofed, log cabin home, while Mrs. Gilbert Wilson poses at one side. Calf Woman wears a long-sleeved, long print dress, and braided hair. She is a Mandan Indian. Mrs. Wilson wife of ethnologist Gilbert Livingston Wilson, wears a long dark skirt, a light-colored blouse and sweater, and a floppy-brimmed hat. A wagon loaded with domestic items is beside the cabin. Taken in 1909, during the Gilbert L. Wilson ethnographic study of the Hidatsa living on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, associated with his collection housed in the Minnesota Historical Society.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
