(Tribune photo) NP Locomotive Dedication Camp Hancock 10-22-1955 Bismarck_Tribune_Fri__Sep_16__1955_p01 Dedication of a steam locomotive which the Northern Pacific Railroad is presenting to the state of North Dakota as an exhibit at Camp Hancock, Bismarck will be held October 22 at 2 p.m., according to Russell Reid, superintendent of the North Dakota Historical Society. The dedication date was selected at a meeting between Reid, L. L. Perrin, public relations counsel for the railroad and Paul L. Westine, local Norther Pacific Railroad agent, here Thursday. A special track is to be erected at Camp Hancock, which is located at Main and First to get the locomotive on the grounds. It will be placed on a section of track which will be underbedded with a crushed rock base. A fence will be erected around the engine to protect it from marauders and souvenir hunters. Reid said that he hopes to arrange a transportation parade for the day with local civic organizations and business houses cooperating. Governor Norman Brunsdale and Robert MacFarlane, president of the Northern Pacific, have signified that they will be on hand for the dedication. The locomotive is a class Q-3 engine, serial number 2164 which has been used to power the North Coast Limited between Chicago and the west coast through Bismarck. It was made in 1909 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, Pa. It will face west at the museum in honor of the railroad’s conquest of the west. It is 78 feet, 4 inches long and is 11 feet wide. It is now stored in Mandan and has been painted and renovated. The Northern Pacific expects to bring it to Bismarck soon and move it onto the grounds.
