The history of the Shakespeare club was reviewed by Mrs. A. V. Haig when the club met for its final program of the year Mnday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Paul Abrahmson. The club was organized January 23, 1905 with a charter membership of eight. It was originally called "The Round Table". When the group decided upon the study of Shakespeare as their basic program, the name was changed to the Devils Lake Shakespeare club. During the 45 years of its existence and with a membership now limited to 20, the programs have been devoted largely to the study of history, literature, art, music and drama. The club has always donated generously to civic projects and to private charity. Their outstanding achievements were the promotion of the Carnegie Library and the giving of cash awards to two high school seniors each year for excellence in English. The latter project has been carried on for the past 23 years. The club holds meetings bi-monthly from October to June. A Christmas party and summer picnic are their annual social functions.
