Title: Northern Pacific Railroad bridge opening at Bismarck, N.D.

Summary: A crowd of people and carriages gather for the opening of the Northern Pacific Railroad bridge between Bismarck and Mandan, N.D.||Completed for $1.1 million, the bridge was designed and built by George S. Morison for the Northern Pacific Railroad and opened October 21, 1882. Three iron and steel trusses soared 50 feet above the river on piers 400 feet apart. The bottom of the deepest pier rests 60 feet below the surface. The bridge was designed to carry two 75-ton locomotives pulling 30 cars carrying 20 tons each. New steel trusses were installed in 1905 at a cost of $500,000. The bridge is now 70 feet above the river and 1,525 feet long.

Summary: Consists of portraits of E. A. Williams and his family members. His wife’s family, the Hettingers, also have portraits in the collection. Photos of family friends, Christmas card photos, and photos of early Bismarck (D.T. and N.D.) are also present.
