Inscription/Marks: [Fiske Portfolio] NOTES ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS Plate 8. PAUL BRAVE FAMILY. The man’s head dress is golden eagle feathers. He has a beaded leather rifle bag that appears to contain a stick or staff, a catlinite pipe and a pipe bag decorated with quill work in a simple mid-nineteenth century floral design. The trade cloth apron is decorated with the original selvedge and ribbon applique. On the apron is a medal of uncertain origin, an Indian Police badge, and an eagle bone whistle traditionally used during battle and for ceremonies. Mrs. Brave has three pairs of ear pendants: two of dentalia and one of horsehair, hair pipes, and brass beads. The trade gingham dress has a front piece of cow bone hair pipes and hide. The child wears a beaded cloth dress and three sets of ear pendants similar to the woman’s, although they appear to be attached ot her hair. On the floor is a fine example of a beaded northern plains saddle blanket. 7 ¼ x 9 ¼.

Summary: Includes prints and negatives of portraits, agriculture, education, wildlife, hunting, Frank Fiske studio portraits, and some views of South Dakota. Fiske’s Native American photographs include portraits, Indian gatherings and ceremonies, boarding schools, Indian houses and dwellings, and Native American agriculture. Fiske’s documentation of daily life on the reservation includes such shots as Sioux customers waiting for a Fort Yates trading store to open; a Sioux dance in the streets of Fort Yates; a plow issue before the agency boarding school; an encampment of tipis, including those traditionally painted; and three Indian men being taxied off the reservation to join the army in WWI.
