Summary: Three-quarter view of Bismarck Evangelical Hospital showing the entrance and left side with emergency stairway taken from across the street. [history] First funds for the erection of the Bismarck Evangelical Hospital were collected in 1907 by a group of ministers in the Dakota Conference of thke Evangelical Church. Building operations were begun in the following year and by February 9th, 1909 the building was sufficiently completed to admit the first patient. A few years later in 1917 a dormitory was built for nurses and trainees. It was dedicated on Sunday June 10, 1917. Not long after that the boiler room and laundry section was built, It is listed with the American College of Surgeons as a standard hospital and has a bed capacity of 140. In 1951 a 52 bed building was completed and opened. In 1971, the original 1907 building was replaced and the remaining facility was modernized. In 1974 the 81 bed addition was opened bringing the bed total to 194. A new School of Nursing was opened on Seventh Street and A Avenue. In 1984 construction of the new surgery and physical rehabilitation wing was completed. The hospital became Medcenter One on June 30, 1984 and official opened the new wing. Medcenter One merged with Sanford Health in July of 2012 and now operates as Sanford Hospital.
