Summary: This aerial view shows the historical archaeological features that still exist that show the site of the Rock Haven Government Boat Docks along the Missouri River seven miles northwest of the town of Mandan, ND. Originally a location for the refueling of steamboats with wood cleared from along the river and known as Bellow's Landing, the site was renamed Rock Haven when the Army Corps of Engineers took over the site in the 1870s. Extensive riverside improvements were then made, including the addition of dry-dock and boat repair facilities. Rock Haven supported the supply ships for the US Army's frontier forts, and saw use until around 1920. The remains and outlines of buildings are easily visible in the 1963 aerial image.
