Title: WPA project building the "Subsistence Homesteads" near Burlington (N.D.)
Date: 1937-1942
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 75/578, "44" stamped, and "Burlington".
Summary: A sign stating: WORK WPA stands beside a road in a project area along the Mouse and Des Lacs Rivers in Ward County (N.D.). Near Burlington, in the Souris River Valley, the pictured properties are part of the first Subsistence Homestead Project. Undertaken and designed by WPA and the North Dakota Rural Rehabilitation Corporation, the purpose of the project was to create affordable small holdings in rural areas. The pictured structures are on the model village that was built in 1937. For a cost of $3,500 a family could own the land, hose, barn, garage, hog house and chicken house which had been constructed and developed by the WPA. 600 acres were set aside for this model village, half of the land would be irrigated by a new dam and reservoir. Fifty properties were included in the 600 acre project, making each farmstead a mere 12 acres in size.
