Inscription/Marks: [Russell Reid log for 00200-5x7 negatives] Elmer T. Judd, L. B. Bishop and party, Cando N.D. 1895. Negative only. [negative] "In 1895, from the last of March until August 1, my own observations were supplemented and enlarged by reason of a party consisting of Dr. I. B. Bishop of New Haven, CT., W. H. Hoyt and John Shaler of Stamford, CT, N. L. Bigelow of Boston, MA., and myself, being in the field every day collecting and noting the migratory and breeding species of this territory, and it is safe to say that very few, if any passed through without some one of the party getting a note of them" (2nd paragraph in Elmer's Introduction to his monograph, self published in 1917: List of ND Birds Found in the Big Coulee, Turtle Mountains and Devils Lake Region… "In 1895, four men from New England - having heard Elmer's stories about bird life - came out to Cando. With Elmer - driving a horse-drawn wagon across the grass-filled open prairie - they helped him collect egg and nest specimens to list and describe birds in the Turtle Mountain Region of ND. One of them described Elmer's character in these words 'Judd was our guide, counselor and friend - a most efficient cook, housekeeper, and driver. - As we learned to know him - we admired his sterling honesty of purpose, and his unfailing patience and good temper. And - we felt we had left a sincere friend when destiny called us home.' Later, in 1917, Elmer published the list of bird species and sub-species 'for fellow students of ornithology.' In an issue of the 1943 Wilson Bulletin, he was described as an 'early ornithologist." (Phyllis Rachel Judd Schultz, granddaughter of Elmer T. Judd) [handwritten on original border of original cabinet card] "As we ranged the prairies collecting in 1895.
