Summary: Front view of Richard Henry Hankinson house on the shore of Lake Elsie. A man in suit and hat stands with hand resting on porch column. The Queen Anne style mansion was built in 1884 by Col. Richard Henry Hankinson, the founder and namesake of the nearby town. After his death in 1911, the home and surrounding land was sold to Max Wipperman. While he never lived in the home, his son Bud and wife Lenora raised their family there.The Wippermans later donated the mansion to the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. The college owned it for just a few years before selling it to a private party.

  • “Collection Number” searches the Collection Number field only and requires an exact match.

The “DETAILS” button provides additional information about an item, as well as the following options:

  • “Collection Summary” details the contents of the entire collection in which the selected item is located.
  • You can print the image and its corresponding details by selecting “Print".
  • “Digitized Images from the Collection” returns a list of all digitized items within that collection (available from the “Collection Summary” screen).
