Title: Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians news piece
Date: 1880
Creator: Barry, D. F.--(David Francis),--1854-1934
Inscription/Marks: [newspiece] Chief Joseph. Chief of the Nez Perces Indians. Photo by D. F. Barry, Superior, Wis. Photographer of Noted Indians.[photo caption] D. F. Barry and Chief Rain-In-The-Face. Chief Joseph was chased from Idaho, across the country to Montana, fighting the army of the West, crossing the different states. Some say he outgeneraled the army of the West, fighting Gen'l. Miles, Gen'l. Gibbons and Gen'l. Howard. He fought Gen'l. Miles on Sept. 30th, 1877, for a number of days on the Milk river, near the Bear Paw Mountains, Montana. After desparate fighting, and the killing of so many of his Indians, he surrendered to General Miles. Joseph captured Lieutenant Jerrome in this fight. Jerrome is a brother of attorney Jerrome of New York City. While Joseph held him captive he treated him with consideration and kindness. Barry: Had Joseph possessed a little education and some military training, he would have been one of the greatest Generals of his time and I consider him one of the greatest Chiefs of North American Indians. He was a very humane man. Gen'l. F. Benteen. [photo caption] Chief Joseph. Chief Joseph died Sept 21st 1904.
