Title: Post Office & Main Street, Westhope (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1908
Inscription/Marks: [back-written] Look as tho I was holding my hand meekly in front of me bt I'm holding on to a go-cart. This was taken on Maket Day June 26. I have marked a |x| over the boys' office. That E. and I stnding by the door & Don is in the doorway. Jeanie is running down the street& is between a kady & gentleman. The chair came this a.m. Both children were delighted wit it but Jean fully understood it was hers. "Mine chair" she calls it. We told her grandma sent it to her & know she understood. I say thank you for her. Alice.
Summary: The street is crowded with people for market day. Storefronts are visible on the left. The first building on the left is a post office. Utility poles run along the right side of the street. There are horses and wagons parked on the left in the distance. The Post Office at Westhope was established in 1903 when it moved from the smaller town of Scotia. The original Post Office was located in a private residence. The Post Office pictured above was built about 1908. Westhope absorbed the earlier communities of Scotia, Richburg and Sergius.
