Date: Circa 1937
Inscription/Marks: [front-written] The Mill Dam, valley City, N.D. 05608 [back of first card-written] We didn't have any car trouble. It's windy here this morning. We arrived O.K. about 3 o'clock Friday morning. We couldn't stay at a tourist camp because out here they don't have such things. So we drove all night. We will R.F.D. drop you another card before we come home. Love Bob & Edna. Mr. & Mrs. John Mishler & Family. Independenc, Iowa. [back of second card-written] Dear Hazel Ballin-Thanks very much for selecting the Calhedrol Cards. I was proud to send them out. Went to our "Little Ch on a Hill" yesterday and saw Esther's sister Ina confirmed. I recognized the Princess St. view on The Clan MacDonald card you sent and shall add it to my collection-Thanks- I'm to have Christmass dinner at Jean Z Hills with all his family. Merry ChriXmas. J.M.D. Miss Hazel B. Nielson, To All States Hotel. Washington, D.C.
Summary: At center is a small dam with water flowing over it. The river is in the foreground. Trees line both shores. A large brick mill with smokestack stands at left, partially obscured behind the trees. There is a bridge visible in the distance behind the dam. The first flour mill in Valley City was constructed on this site in 1878. The bridge, in the distance beyond the dam, was first built of wood and completed in 1898. Between 1936 and 1937 a concrete bridge was constructed, which was in turn replaced with a modern concrete bridge in 1991.
