Date: 1856-1872
Inscription/Marks: [Caption] THE OLD POST TRADER'S STORE AT FORT BUFORD, DAKOTA. This building stood from 1856 to 1872, when it was torn down by the firm of Leighton & Jordan and replaced by a new structure. The building shown, with its log walls and dirt roof, is typical of the architecture employed in constructing all of the early military posts along the upper Missouri.
Summary: Two long, low log buildings joined together with a group of men and Indian women standing in front. Copied from an illustration opposite page 8 in the book The Conquest of the Missouri Being the Story of the Life and Exploits of Captain Grant Marsh By Joseph Mills Hanson published in 1909.
