Title: Theodore Roosevelt holding thieves at bay, Badlands
Date: ca. 1886
Inscription/Marks: Roosevelt guarding boat thieves though not a Chimney Butte episode. This is typical of his Dakota Days as Deputy Sheriff
Summary: A recreation of a scene where Theodore Roosevelt tracked, rounded up, and brought thieves to Dickinson for trial.||Theodore Roosevelt came to North Dakota first in 1883 to hunt buffalo. In 1886, three men stole a boat belonging to Roosevelt and took off down the Little Missouri River. Roosevelt tracked them downstream, captured them, and brought them to Dickinson for trial.Even a wealthy eastern rancher had trouble with crime. In 1886, Theodore Roosevelt chased three men who had stolen the boat he had tied up on the banks of the Little Missouri River near his Elkhorn Ranch. He tracked down the thieves and marched them all the way to Dickinson where he could turn them over to the sheriff. The sheriff paid Roosevelt a fee for rounding up criminals as required by law.
