Title: Decorations for ball, 15th US Infantry, Fort Buford (D.T.)
Date: 1882
Summary: Flags from the 15th Infantry Regiment and bunting decorate a room to be used to host a ball at Fort Buford. Two cannon and rifles also decorate the scene.||Entertainment helped relieve the boredom of life at a remote Army post. Soldiers and officers put on plays, enjoyed band concerts, and organized frequent balls or “hops.” The ball room was usually highly decorated with patriotic and military flags, swords, guns, and other materials.Flags from the 15th Infantry Regiment and bunting decorate a room to be used to host a ball at Fort Buford. Rifles with bayonets are tied into a pyramid in front of two cannon on the back wall. Just above them is a sign with words: "Cherubusco, Contrearas, North Anna. Petersburg." On 11 February 1847, a new 15th Infantry was activated for service in Mexico. As companies of the 15th arrived at Vera Cruz, they moved inland to join General Winfield Scott's army advancing on Mexico City. The regiment fought in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco, as well as smaller engagements before storming the walls of Chapultepec in Mexico City. In April 1864, the 15th SC and the rest of Kershaw's brigade returned to Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia command and fought in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbour and the siege of Petersburg. A pair of crossed swords are fixed in front of more flags in both back corners. Crossed swords forming a star hang on wall behind lantern with a United States flag in front. Wicker chairs and love seat stand on top of floor rugs on outside edges of dance floor. Lights are suspended below striped bunting hanging from ceiling
