Folder: 0000.000
Item: 00003
Title: Cecil Atkinson holding beaver and trap, Mandan (N.D.)
Date: circa 1930
Summary: A man holds a trap in one hand, and displays beavers that he has trapped hanging from a tree. He displays a beaver tail in particular.||Beavers were trapped nearly to extinction by 1820. Beaver fur made an ideal felt for gentlemen’s hats. The beaver population recovered when fashionable men began to wear silk hats instead of beaver fur hats. Today, beaver can be found in most of North Dakota’s streams. They are still trapped, but the market does not demand as many beavers today as it did in 1800.
