Sloan was a Presbyterian minister who accepted a call to the Presbyterian Church of Bismarck after he had visited the village to help the congregation organize. For many years, he traveled along the Northern Pacific railroad line establishing Presbyterian churches in several towns along the line. Sloan also founded and served the Glencoe church thirty miles south of Bismarck.
