Title: Villa Vallombrosa, Cannes, France, also known as Chateau De La Bocca
Date: 1880
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0042-47.
Summary: The image shows the de Mores family home in Cannes, France, from the side. The Villa Vallombrosa is set on the cliffs of the valley of the Riou River. Built entirely of pink gneiss, the style is neo-Gothic. The main building block bristles with towers, both square and round, all with crenelated battlements. Crosses are pierced though the stone work of the towers. The Villa has a terrace running around the main floor, at a grade above the ground level of the landscape. The grounds that surround the villa are extensive, and a pathway can be seen meandering through the park-like area. __Designed in 1852 by the architect Thomas Smith for Lord Londesborough who sells it to Richard Manca, duke of Vallombrosa in 1861. He in turn redesigns the hall, adds a vaulted pointed-arch chapel, expands and enriches the park. A two level building, with turrets spiked with crenelations and machicolations, is on the rocks of the Riou dale. To date (2018), no considerable modification has been made to the building which remains, outside as well as inside in the common parts, one of the best examples of the eclectic neo-Gothic architecture. Today it is on the inventory of Historic Monuments.
