Folder: 0002
Item: 00078
Title: Marquis de Mores on horseback with his 1873 Winchester rifle
Date: 1883-1886
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0042-78.
Summary: Marquis de Mores is seated on a horse with a gun in a holster around his waist and a rifle over his shoulder. There is a knife inserted into his right boot . The photograph was taken by an unknown photographer circa 1886. He is wearing a fringed leather coat, fringed leather chaps and high topped boots and leather riding gloves. About the photo our Curator of Research, Mark Halvorson states “the gun in the photo is probably a Model 1873 Winchester rifle, round barrel . . . it could be the Model 1876, but since they made few of them, my money is on the Model 1873. We know the Marquis liked Winchesters . . . . he had a number of different models (at least 2 Model 1873) and calibers, including the big game one – Model 1886 Winchester rifle .50-110 (Express), we still have the re-loading tools for that one. ”since they made few of them, my money is on the Model 1873. Other than that, the background is Medora, you can see the hotel to the right, and the double buildings, which were the headquarters of the Northern Pacific Refrigerator Car Company, see SAHRL 0042-0181. I don’t know the name of the horse is unknown. Maker of the saddle is unknown.”
